The Mishawaka Police Department has partnered with the 525 Foundation’s Drop 2 Stop program.
The dropbox is located in the lobby of the police department. This will make it easier for you to drop off and get rid of any prescription or over-the-counter medication you no longer use.
The drug drop box was recently placed inside the police department to help combat drug misuse and abuse here in Michiana.
You can come in to drop off items during normal business hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Some of the items you can drop off include medications, vitamins, ointments, pet medications, prescription patches, and over-the-counter medications.
You cannot drop off needles, inhalers, aerosol cans, thermometers, lotions or liquids, and hydrogen peroxide.
Mishawaka Police Sgt. Steve Headley advises you to check with your pharmacy or local health department to see where to dispose of those items safely.
But, no matter what you get rid of, it’s important to remove unused and unwanted medications from your home so they won’t end up in the wrong hands.
“Certainly, you don’t want young kids, finding it and out of curiosity happening to take something and have an adverse effect,” said Sgt. Headley. “Plus, it’s also better for the environment. As opposed to throwing it away or flushing it down the drain. Because it causes some pollution issues.”
